Hey everyone! I’m excited to show you guys a great new language learning tool called “Learning with Texts” by Benny Lewis. As you know I’m a big fan of Benny Lewis and his approach to learning languages. He inspired me to even consider being able to pass the Goethe Insitut C1 exam in 6 months with my low level of German.
He’s got an awesome book about learning German called “Why German is Easy” and he’s also got a general language learning book that I’ve also purchased from him called “The Language Hacking Guide“. If you haven’t already you should check out those books and definitely check out his blog!
Anyways, this new language learning tool is similar to Lingq, but WAY BETTER! It’s easier to use and it’s free! Honestly I would have paid 10 dollars for LWT if I had to, but I don’t… so I’ll send a donation, cause that’s how great I think this program is.
Learning with texts is very similar to Lingq. You can use Learning with texts on your computer or cellphone (if you have access to internet). Basically you go to the website, log in (or register) and then choose your target language. You copy a text in your target language and paste it into “learning with texts”. (I personally use Zeit.de articles for my German texts) After you do this you can save and open it. When you open it all the words are highlighted in blue. As you read the text you click on the words you don’t know, find the translation and save them. Slowly you will build up a database of unknown words that you can either export into an Anki deck or do whatever you like with it. After you’ve finished reading the text and selection the words you don’t know, there will be words that you do know still highlighted in blue. Click the button at the top of the page that says “I know all”. This will save all these words and add them to your “known word” database. The more texts you read the more words are added to your known and unknown word database. Also the more you read texts with your unknown words, the less “unknown” they become and the eventually will go into your “known” word database.
I really like this program because it’s helping me read texts in German and add new words to my vocabulary! I really highly suggest you try this program out: Simply because it’s free and because it’s really helpful!
